Yes, a disconnect feature is what it needs. My problem is essentially solved in that I can now get it to work in manual mode.
As far as design goes, it seems there are two problems. In manual mode, I can click on the connection to connect but I can't click on it to disconnect. The radio button goes from OFF to ON, but goes from ON to ON too. And then there is the problem that when you disable networking and Suspend, it resumes with networking enabled.
