I guess it's fair to mark this as "Confirmed", although it's not clear
to me whether Ubuntu should implement the proposed fix.

Are there alternate ways to fix the problem?  Making ls unaliased in
shell buffers by default would of course obviate the need to cope with
colorization out of the box, although I suppose some people actually
like it.
