hi, As of 5.3.0 it is possible to compile php with the external GD while keep having the new features (most of them at least, like imagerotate or imagefilter). That won't fix the non fixed bugs in debian's gd or the bad patches (afair, it affects only debian, ubuntu being smarter when it comes to sec fixes) but it will at least give the ubuntu users all the features they are expecting.
