What you are actually requesting is installing/using a package from a 'foreign' architectures, read: installing an i386 package in an amd64 system. Ubuntu nor Debian support this yet, the project which is trying to solve this is called 'multiarch'. With multiarch, you can do exactly this. However, multiarch is not there yet.
The current workarounds like the ia32-libs package is an ugly workaround which requires an huge amount of maintainance overhead which we are not going to do for mplayer. You can do this by compiling mplayer your own, but this way you are on your own with security fixes, library transitions and upgrades to new versions. -- Gruesse/greetings, Reinhard Tartler, KeyID 945348A4 -- The 64bit mplayer binary/package can't use the 32bit win32codecs to play *wmv files. https://launchpad.net/bugs/571 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
