I think there are several different sound issues and we are assuming it's the same bug.
In my case the problem is now gone -- I had to use alsamixer to set a non-zero PCM volume, though. I'm pretty sure I did have a problem because there was sound in flash video, and flash responds to the Alsa PCM volume setting as it should.
