I tried the patch but I still experience the problem. I have a Novatel MC950D and I'm running Jaunty on an ASUS 1000 eee PC. If I boot with the stick plugged in, the nm-applet will connect. If I remove the stick and re-plug it, the connection is not re-established. If I don't boot with the stick plugged in Network Manager applet never detects the stick.
