Ooops, now that i have read all the way through the thread i feel a bit
foolish. Can anyone just delete my last response?

The main thing i think is to post a question first and then start
working through documentation and looking stuff up in oogle searches and
things. the chances are that someone will point you to exactly the
right page for what you need. If you find an answer elsewhere then it
definitely helps a lot if you post a brief summary of the answer or post
a link and then mark the question as solved.

The main page worth working through to fix multimedia generally is
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
and then try the trouble-shooting guide here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

There are a lot of bugs around in sound but not every problem is a bug,
sometimes it's just an easy fix.

Congrats David & Walt on handling this flaming so well and many apologies to
you both for mine.
Apols and regards from
Tom :)
