There is no indicator applet upstream.  This is something the Ubuntu
devs themselves are trying out and I imagine that upstream will adopt it
once they get it right.  Just like pidgin does within Jaunty, Empathy
defaults to the indicator applet in karmic.  The bug in this case is
that there is a small vertical black line left on the taskbar where
empathy's icon was before.  If the orginal reporter was questioning the
fact that the icon is gone, this bug should be invalidated as the fact
the icon is gone is whats supposed to happen.
