OK, so before I close this, let's confirm that the volume keys work on
the udev level. Please do
killall gnome-settings-daemon
xev | grep -A2 KeyPress
move the mouse cursor into the new xev window, and press the volume
keys. You should get output like
KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x1200001,
root 0x10b, subw 0x0, time 2827695, (92,45), root:(879,663),
state 0x0, keycode 123 (keysym 0x1008ff13, XF86AudioRaiseVolume),

With "XF86AudioRaiseVolume" being the important part here.
After the test, press Alt+F2 and run gnome-settings-daemon.
