I starts fine now. First time and second time I started it it crashed. I remember that I have also started the client itself, after the prefernces app crashed two times....
Possible solution: start 'ubuntuone-client-applet' from a commandline and close it start 'ubuntuone-client-preferences' from the system->preferences menu. I suspect that the first command creates some configuration (file) so that the preferences command can save some preferences to that file....
