This problem sounds disturbingly familiar to the problem with Dell BIOSes where you cannot tell the BIOS you've allocated more video memory. (see: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02247.html)
The patch mentioned there was later introduced into the XFree86 source tree, (and I assume into XOrg).
