Looking through the log, several different things are core dumping
throughout the upgrade.

This could well be a sign of a memory problem; reboot your machine, hold
SHIFT to get to the boot loader menu, and choose the "Memory test"
option.

If that's all ok, this could be a problem elsewhere, e.g. in the libc.
I'm marking the e2fsprogs task as Invalid, but will stay subscribed to
the bug - if it's not a memory problem, we'll try and isolate what the
problem actually is - and go from there.

Did you get apport messages for the core dumps btw?
