Thank you for taking time to help me. I was trying to change proxy server settings (System->Preferences->Network Proxy). I entered my necessary settings and hit 'Apply system-wide'. A dialog box appeared requesting my password. I expected to the system to make change in proxy server settings only I entered the correct password and hit 'Ok' but I hit 'Cancel' and it made the change to the system settings without requiring authorisation.
