I agree with Travis. Synaptic is the only program that requires root to launch from the Applications menu, AFAIK. Yes, gdebi and gnome-app-install require root to do anything, but you can at least start them without root. Synaptic should be placed in Administration. gnome-app-install is sufficient for the Apps menu...
