I don't think this is linux-rt related. There has been a fair bit going on with the boot process lately, which could be upsetting things. I suggest booting without the splash option on the kernel command line. So, in grub, press shift to enable the ability to move up and down the menu, then press e to edit an option, then use the arrows to move to the "splash" word, right after "quiet", and delete it. Then press Control + X to boot, and see if that helps any.
