It's now clear that this is the same as bug #436341 and bug #448911. I
just tried this again, reverting to the Ict 13 kernel below:

 Ubuntu version and kernel version
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=9.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=karmic
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 9.10"
Linux cupid 2.6.31-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 13 02:08:03 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux
model name : Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2800+

All else being unchanged, now I get the multi-color screen reported in
the earlier bug, when I try to switch to a text tty, instead of the many
cardbus messages. HOWEVER the cardbus messages ARE showing up in
kern.log:

r...@cupid:~# tail -5 /var/log/kern.log
