I am researching some facts on why so many people are getting this
error and have NON-ECC RAM, turns out ECC mode works with NON-ECC RAM
(aka Parity RAM).
Here's an excerpt from the article:
There are special ECC memory modules designed specifically for use
in ECC mode, but most modern motherboards that support ECC will in fact
work in that mode using standard parity memory modules as well. Since
parity memory includes one extra bit for every eight bits of data, this
means 64 bits worth of parity memory is 72 bits wide, which means there
is enough to do ECC...

My guess is that Ubuntu is detecting this option is available, but it is
NOT turned on in the BIOS. It could be the AMD Athlon 64bit X2, or what
ever DRAM modules you have installed causing this option to be
available. I know that the AMD datasheet for 64bit X2s state that they
have ECC mode. So maybe the CPU is the trigger.
