WHat is the CPU usage when you play audio in karmic? The easiest way to
find this out is to run gnome-system-monitor.

Secondly, have you tried disabling pulseaudio's glitch free function? To
do this, edit /etc/pulse/default.pa, and find this line:

load-module module-udev-detect

Then add "tsched=0" to the end of it, log out, and log back in.

Finally, were you attempting to play audio when running the live CD, or
when karmic was installed?

Thanks for any information you can provide.
