I've managed to solve the problem for my Dell Inspiron 1520. It's look like I was using the kernel (2.6.28-15) from the old 9.04 ubuntu version instead of the new kernel (2.6.31-14) from the 9.10 ubuntu version. This was due to choosing to keep the original menu.lst of grub when I did the update.
