Not sure whether this is relevant but I did find a way on my machine to get
sound back working. At best it's a workaround rather than a solution.
At the terminal type:
sudo alsa force-reload
And at least on my machine (aplay & arecord - ALC883 Analog HDA intel device)
this seems to get sound working again until I restart.
