Switching to kdm might fix this since kdm may not use xsplash yet. I never got this bug until upgrading to karmic, which leads to me believe that while this bug may have existed for a while, the message saying it couldn't set to mode NxN, was being hid by the usplash splash screen. It looks like that the error message appears in the transition from usplash to xsplash, so that would explain why a lot of people only get this in karmic.
