Christopher, The problem is due to a faulty upgrade to 9.10. You are still using the Jaunty kernel (2.6.28) instead of the Karmic kernel (2.6.31). Try running 'sudo update-grub' and reboot. Note that you may still have to unmute the devices in the mixer controls after rebooting.
