Another remark: If I kill gnome-settings-daemon the problem goes away as told above, but as soon as I restart gnome-settings-daemon, the problem comes back immediately, without needing to close the lid another time. Seems that closing the lid puts the GPU into some bad state which gnome- settings-daemon cannot handle.
