FYI I tried all this and did an oem install also, but nothing.  i still get
total disaster, can't start x-windows, blue screen of death-esque isplay.

argh.  am in bad situation.

must be something about this dell monitor not being able to interpreet
properly?

when i boot from livecd i have to start in "safe" graphics mode or else
crash.
