Was this a one time problem? Yes.
The problem appeared on accepting the first routine invitation to update. After collecting the evidence, System-Administration-Update Manager ran successfully with no user input other than default responses. I think there have been further routine updates. If so, they have been error free. Sorry to be vague but I have three different versions current in different places.
