Doris, what the desktop shows you is reality.  If you see the files
disappear in one window, but show up in another window, then the files
were "moved".  If you see the files in both windows after draging the
files, then they were "copied".  If you see the files completely
disappear, then they were "deleted".

There might be a slight unintuitive behavior that is happening to
confuse you.  By default, any drag-n-drops for files/folders *within*
the computer are "move" operations.  However, any drag-n-drops for
files/folders from one device to another (like your external drive), are
"copy" operations.

Try it out.  Make a test file in Open Office with some gibberish and
save it.  Then play around with its icon by moving it to other folders
to see what happens.  You can open the windows of other folders by going
to the "Places" menu in the top bar of your desktop.
