I have to do this every time I restart on this particular computer. Sometimes, I get two volume icons; sometimes, a volume icon and a space where the NM icon _should_ be. In the latter case, it appears the NM icon is actually a transparent 1x1 pixel - if I hunt for it (takes a few minutes) I can click on the sweet spot and actually get the NM menus.
