yes, I'm using the modified kernel (-core2) and the camera is now
correctly recognized. Fn-F6 works now as well. So the debs are alright.
My internal webcam was working fine under Intrepid, but broke with the
Karmic install (fresh, not an upgrade) and with the normal kernel I have
the same symptoms like everyone else with the Bison cam.

With the patched kernel Skype works now perfectly. On further
investigation I also discovered that cheese is taking the correct
picture, it is only the "live preview" in cheese that is messed up. So
it looks like the udelay patch solves the usb issue for me too but I
have still another problem to solve :-) That one is likely more related
to video playback than to this bug. However, this means that the
workaround also works for my cam model (0c45:62c0). Thanks again!
