Yep, it seems that you're getting to the default pm-settings as well.
The easiest option is to edit the file 
/usr/share/hal/information/10freedesktop/99-video-quirk-default.fdi, and turn 
all the <merge something> true </merge> to false. I've included my default. 
When you get the chance to test it, I would be happy to hear your result. 

I'm curious if the default settings are outdated, and it makes sense to
change them now that acpi has been around for a while, and maybe these
quirks are not doing more harm than good in the generic case.
