Now that I had the symptoms right, I found the solution at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa- driver/+question/90609. gnome-volume-control does not have the capability to let me enable the jack switch. I had to install gnome- alsamixer, which provides a check box to enable the jack switch.
It would be nice if the default behavior was more appropriate and/or the means of getting controlling the behavior was more easily discoverable. -- Can't get sound through headphone jack on nx6110 in fresh 9.10 install.
