Ok, guys, I did my homework.

I downloaded the debs for i386 and amd64.  First off, the i386 version
is higher than the amd64's, so it's not a big surprise it has more
juice.

The big difference is that the i386 deb has some config files (that go
in /etc), that ensures /dev/kvm gets proper permissions.  It also
contains the preinst script that creates the group kvm, which the amd64
completely lacks.

In light of those simple facts, I merely vamped the files (after
inspecting them of course) and manually installed them in my amd64
system.  The result is that now I finally have my user to access
/dev/kvm without root privileges.

I do hope this gets fixed for the next release.
