It looks like Ubuntu is using a snapshot of Gutenprint where the borderless functionality is broken (so was the non-borderless, for that matter). Ubuntu needs to update to a newer CVS snapshot or back off to 5.0.
I'm hoping to release 5.1.0 soon, which will also have improved CUPS 1.2 functionality (autogeneration of PPD files, support for CUPS 1.2 custom parameter values).
