Hiya, I guess I solved my own problem by installing yet another language pack (e.g. Swedish) and restarted the computer. After that IBus works like a charm. The IBus applet now shows "Japanese - Anthy" and "Turn off Input method". Also the short key works for switching input method (ctrl- space).
