Hello. I'm experiencing this same issue. I'm running Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10) with Gnome / Compiz + Emerald. I use Evolution many times during my normal activity, and this behavior is causing me problems at work...
For the moment, I have been using the same "Workaround" that suggested Mr_W, but come on... this is not the way you want to "Navigate" between your folders...
