Confirmed. This is a problem with sane itself, as it is frontend-independent. I tried scanning from a HP 3500 with scanimage -vvv: Tests (--test) ran fine, mostly, but when trying to scan it hang up, the last line displayed being "Closing device". Downgrading to Jaunty's libsane 1.0.19 solved the problem. Everything works fine, even other scanners that were configured through third-party drivers with the old (Karmic's) libsane. (btw: a dpkg -i --force-all libsane_1.0.19-23ubuntu7_i386.deb is enough, no need to downgrade the other packages)
