I have experienced the same behavior with Ubuntu Karmic beginning as far back as Alpha 6. I'm obviously not alone:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1276146 They are quite random in nature. I've experienced such lockups with web based apps and also simple text projects, whether Gedit or Abiword. They would occur as often as several times right in a row or as seldom as once a week. When they occur absolutely nothing works but powering off with the power button. Alas I was lazy, and since Jaunty had always been stable as a rock I just gave up on Karmic. (I multi-boot). The reason I'm fairly convinced this must be kernel related is that, since Karmic was largely unusable, I upgraded to Lucid (testing) as soon as the Toolchain was uploaded and I'm not experiencing these lockups with the Lucid kernel. Most recently I reinstalled Karmic for grub2 testing purposes and it's still largely unusable because of hard lockups. The first occurred performing the initial post-install updates which created a minor mess in itself. I then experienced another using Firefox. I have very simple hardware: VIA PC2500 mobo, w/C-7D cpu, VIA Unichrome gpu (no 3D), VIA VT8237 audio, w/2GB RAM. I decided I really should try to pursue this and I do have the time to do testing and provide info as needed, although you'll have to be explicit about what's needed, how to get it, how to post it, etc. We do need to fix this Koala killer! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- Hard lockups with new kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
