I just tried the newer Ubuntu 2.6.31-15.50 kernel. It also is broken on
this machine, but it's behavior is somewhat different. Instead of
locking up, it reboots the machine every time, before I even have a
chance to log in. Sometimes it makes it as far as playing the login
screen music before rebooting, sometimes it reboots before then.

(Btw, running the machine in this weird Ubuntu 9.10 state but with the
old 2.6.28-15.52 kernel is very much less than optimal. E.g., sound now
does not work at all, even though it worked fine before the upgrade.
I'd have been better off never doing the upgrade.)

works fine with 2.6.28-15.52
