I have done a few tests.
Changing settings in BIOS didn't help. Running a rescue kernel and "apt-get
update" didn't help either.
Then I decided to install in a primary partition. I used the kubuntu alternate
install cd this time, and installed in hdb4. During install grub failed again,
so I used Lilo again. Some error messages occured during the first run. The
file /var/log/fsck/checkfs shows that the partitions of hda (FAT32 and
ReiserFS) could not be opened by UUID ("No such file or directory"). Only
partitions on the same drive (hdb) were valid. The UUID values show in the log
are okay. The dmesg log file shows that also the swap (hdb2) is okay. However,
the dmesg show that both ide0 and ide1 the resource is not free.
I could continue with Ctrl+D, and run Adept for updates. Running Adept causes
errors and after restart the system hangs just as my initial message. So I
guess that now even the root partition hdb4 could not be found.
