I applied the diff the Howard mentioned
(http://www.openldap.org/devel/cvsweb.cgi/servers/slapd/bconfig.c.diff?r1=1.401&r2=1.402&hideattic=1&sortbydate=0)
to 2.4.20 and now it works!
