No problem. After reading through a good many postings, here and there, about this very problem, I was able to edit certain files to remove any references to the problem packages and was finally able to complete the upgrade. I wish I could tell you exactly what I did, but in the heat of the moment I tried many things and when things finally worked I just wanted to go home. It was very late and I was tired.
I had other problems with the upgrade. I now know better than to upgrade to a new release without first upgrading to all the intermediary releases. (I went from 8.04 to 9.10.) I should have just waited for the next LTS (Lucid.)
