I did some tests - when I execute (btw, it's -stop-xscreensaver, not 
-stop-screensaver):
$ mplayer MOVIE -stop-xscreensaver
it doesn't go blank. When I execute:
$ smplayer MOVIE
it *does* go blank. So it's definitely smplayer bug, not one of mplayer.
