You probably didnt have the new kernel loaded before you uninstalled it. Ubuntu defaults to the standard kernel unless you reorder your entries in grub (there is some way to edit the comments in /boot/grub/menu.lst to do this automagically via update-grub, but i dont remember how). Glad that it still works. Can't figure out why this hasn't been included in recent kernel updates - ive stopped using ubuntu and switched to a distro that does this by default. Changing the default to module should work for a majority of people, and solve this problem for us without requiring a kernel recompile.
