Mel,

I am sorry that the backports-modules did not work for you. It was more
of a last resort than anything else. Also, the reason I mention
unmuting devices is that if the backports-modules worked, then sometimes
new devices appear in the mixer and are set to mute by default. That
did not happen in your case.

I have talked to a sound developer about your issue. Your information
about having a X-Fi sound card made your problem much more apparent.
Linux presently does not support your X-Fi very well. This is for a
variety of reasons, but is actively being worked on.

There are a couple of things you could do at this point. I am not
personally familiar with VMWare, but you *might* be able to mess around
with the configurations so that VMWare presents a different (emulated)
sound card to your Ubuntu guest. This way, Ubuntu thinks it is using a
different, supported card.

Another possibility involves getting your hands dirty, and helping Linux
out. If you are able and willing, you could do some testing for the
sound developers, trying out the cutting-edge versions of the drivers
that are available for compiling. If you wish to go this route (not for
the faint of heart!), let me know, and we can talk about it some more.
