I had the same problem. I downloaded the x64 ISO on (around) launch
day, but didn't install until today.

My configuration already matched the steps you had listed. What I did was
uncheck and recheck one of the "Downloadable from the Internet" options listed
in:
Edit > Software Sources > Ubuntu Software
...which triggered a re-authentication and cache update upon clicking
"Close". The cache update solved the problem.
Just so you know the symptoms, I could pull in screenshots (as I assume
they're pulled in live) but no data about the applications would appear,
nor would the install/update buttons. There was generic "no data could
be found" kind of messages in place of the missing app info.
Hope that helps!

On a related note, in search of an answer, I checked the (offline)
documentation at
Ubuntu Help Center > Topics > Adding, Removing and Updating
Applications > Installing an application
Step 3 notes the arrow button that needs to be clicked to continue with
the installation process, but step 4 jumps directly over the information
I was looking for in order to install the application, which was "where
the hell is in the install button?". I don't know what can be done
about that, but a mention of where the install button should be on-
screen would have been helpful in determining that I did indeed have a
problem, and it wasn't just user error.
