In alsamixer I went over to where it said "mic" and hit "m" to make the square turn green making the inside lettering go white. This apparently unmuted my microphone.
There-after odd thing is if I use "Sound Recorder" or even Mangler from http://www.mangler.org/ I can hear myself through my speakers, but the sound never travels to my applications that need it. I upgrade myself to the lastest version of Pulseaudio still with no fix. The microphone still only works when using the LiveCD.
