the results are identical, except for the PID numbers in the log.

I understand there's no obvious error there, but there's not a lot I can
do. I start brasero, hit the 'Disc copy' button, and get a dialog that
tells me 'Select disc to copy' with a grayed out dropdown that says 'No
available disc'. there's a CD in the (virtual) drive. it appears in the
places menu, and gnomebaker is quite happy to copy it.

there are these lines in the log:

(brasero:17322): BraseroMedia-DEBUG: At scsi-sg.c:196: Handle ready

which look to contain errors: "SCSI command error: Invalid command",
"GET PERFORMANCE failed", "wrong page size".

this should be easy to replicate - just create a VMWare VM, boot a
karmic live CD in it, then run brasero...

PS. I've seen identical behavior on a 'real' PC too, but I don't have
immediate access to that PC.
