Well, I guess this isn't really a bug -- just a lack of an expected
feature, and pretty useless help files. The bottom line is that you
cannot directly mailmerge against a spreadsheet. Instead, you have to
transform the spreadsheet into a database using the OO DB package.
So, in order to solve this, I did the following:
1. installed the openoffice.org-base and openoffice.org-base-core packages.
2. Using the now-installed OpenOffice Database app, connected to my
spreadsheet file as a database, and saved the new database file.
3. Back in OpenOffice Word, try mailmerge again, this time connecting to your
new .odb file, and it will work.
