Finally solved this today!
After poking around my music collection with songbird and kid3 I found (or
realized) the following

In amarok a genre 'classical' was listed
The albums listed in it were of the genre 'classical' (only 8 of them)
The missing albums were of the genre 'Classical'
In amarok there was no genre 'Classical'
In songbird all the albums that were 'classical' or 'Classical' show up
together under the 'Classical' genre - which is precisely what happened in
older versions of amarok as my collection has not changed since long before I
upgraded and previously this problem did not exist for me.
When I edited the ID3 tags of the the 8 'classical' albums, making them
'Classical' they showed up, with all the missing ones, under the amarok
'classical' genre and there is still not a 'Classical' genre to be found.
Songbird did not notice anything had changed!

The 2 'unknown' genres, with the same one album in it them, went away
when I assigned a genre to the album - now it appears once only under
'Comedy'

So, problem solved, but rather odd and unhelpful behaviour - not a problem if
your genre capitalization is consistent but mine came from cddb lookups and I
had no reason to think I would need to edit them.
But now I am happy :-)
