Dave: Thank you so much for your assistance! Sorry I sounded a little harsh at the end of my previous post. It sounds like all GNOME apps including Firefox are sharing the common Print dialogue which has an option to save to PDF, PostScript or SVG.
OpenOffice.org is missing this "Print to file" option in its Print dialogue for some reason. Export to PDF option of OpenOffice is fine as it needs to be able to export complex structures like forms etc. Yet the print dialogue is better to be standard.
