Hi, I was experiencing the same problem with 9.10 on my Thinkpad T30. I
did the following (propably what Daniel T Chen also suggested):

- ran alsamixer
- scrolled right to "external"
- deactivated it (pressing the "m") key

Now sound output works just fine! Also, the volume up/down buttons
started to work. Works both for "Pulse Audio" and the "Intel ICH3" stuff
here. Looks like we have the same Audio cards in our T30:

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio 
Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02)
